iPads in the classroom, school wireless networks, wifi service providers,Apple’s iPad has taken the world by storm. Young or old, it doesn’t matter, everyone loves them. What’s not to love?

They are portable, fast, sleek, and easy to use. My mom, who swore up and down she would never own one, got one for Christmas and she’s now completely addicted.

She’s buying my grandma one now too, which should be interesting to say the least. Then on the other end of the spectrum is my iPad loving 9 month old who is fascinated with them.

He loves swiping those chunky little fingers across the screen to reveal the next farm animal or nursery rhyme. They are a great tool for everyone and can really make fantastic learning devices, which is what many schools have already come to find out.

With the incredible array of learning apps available for iPads, their accelerating proliferation into education comes as no surprise. “Our share of tablets in education is 94 percent … which is sort of unheard of. I’ve never seen that kind of market share before”, said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

From excited student who of course love them to the leery teachers who initially didn’t want them, it seems everyone sings their praises once they have successfully integrated the iPads in the classroom.  Here are some examples of how schools are using and benefiting from utilizing iPads in the classroom.

Improving Literacy

At Central Elementary School in California, “A simple voice recorder option is having greatest potential to improve the fluency of students”, said Kathy Shirley, Technology and Media Services Director of the Escondido Union School District. “Kids are learning at a rate that I didn’t think was possible,” Said Shirley.

For the teachers and students at Northwest Kansas Tech, having iPads in the classroom has opened up many new learning opportunities. In a tech school such as this one with a lot of hands on learning, the iPads still comes into play as a very useful tool.

Greg Unger, diesel technology instructor at Northwest Kansas Technical College said “iPad and AirPlay allow us to demonstrate a procedure just once, record it, and play it on the big screen for all the students to view and discuss.”

Designing Scientific Experiments

Nanyang Girls’ High School, one of Singapore’s top public schools implemented a 1:1 iPad program in 2011. One really cool way they are using them is for designing scientific experiments and documenting results.

“The students are building and firing water rockets, and using iPad and apps not only to document the process, but to measure the angle of launch, create velocity time graphs, and map the rockets’ trajectories,” says physics teacher Mark Shone.

Creating Interactive Textbooks

Essay Academy in Manchestor England has used iPads and Macs to transform their school from being on the verge of being shut down to an outstanding educational facility with an impressive 100% pass rate.

One of the interesting ways they use iPads in every department is with iBooks Author to create interactive textbooks which are much more engaging than any traditional textbook. “You’ve got videos and 3D graphics in front of you, and you can highlight and take notes. It’s a more interactive way of reading, and it really helps us learn,” says seventh grader Hamza Umar.

I hope these few examples show you that iPads are more than just a cool tool for web browsing and watching videos. They can really transform the whole learning process into a really engaging and collaborative experience that can benefit every department in the school. From students to teachers, everyone loves them and when implemented correctly, they provide unlimited benefits.
