BYOD (bring your own device) started out as just a cool trend in the business world. Now it’s more like a requirement. According to Forrester Research, 50% of organizations officially condone BYOD. It may have taken a little longer to reach schools, but it’s there now and it’s spreading like wildfire. BYOD allows students and faculty to bring their own mobile devices for use on the school wireless network.

BYOD in schools

Today’s students are little digital natives. They have grown up with and are used to this technology. Mobile devices like the iPad are what get today’s students engaged and interested. BYOD offers a great solution to bringing all this wonderful technology to students.

Below is a great infographic that highlights the growing trend of mobile devices on school wireless networks. It’s got some pretty interesting stats like:

- 77% of parents agree tablets help children’s learning and creativity.

- There are 1.5 million tablets currently being used by students in the United States.

- 90% of students of all ages say that tablets help them study more efficiently.

As you can see from the infographic above, mobility in schools will only continue to grow contributing to the accelerating proliferation of BYOD. According to a recent article from EdTech Magazine, 85% of educational institutions now allow students, teachers and faculty to use personal devices on schools with an impressive 44% of K-12 schools allowing students to bring their own devices.

Mobile technology in the classroom is the present and future of education. Schools need to realize this and get ready to implement solutions like 1:1, BYOD, or some sort of combination of the two to bring this technology and all the benefits with it to their school.
