With an upgraded, secure wireless network Healthcare CIO’s can sleep a little easier at night!

Here are 7 Reasons to upgrade your hospital wireless network.

Connect and segment your organization’s wireless medical and mobile devices

Those cool wireless infusion pumps, mobile carts, bedside mobile workstations, voice over IP handsets and that doctor’s personal iPad, yep they can all connect to the network using the same wireless access points.

Automate on-boarding of wireless devices

You don’t really want to touch every single device that enters your healthcare facility, or do you? Improve the wireless access for patients and visitors.

Hey, 802.11 b/g, “Life moves pretty fast...if you don’t stop and look around, you could miss it.”

Ferris Bueller s Day Off ferris bueller 2541502 1600 900

Ferris Bueller was right about life, wrong about wireless. Who wants to stop and look around for a wireless signal? If you’re still on 802.11 b/g solution, you’re doing your healthcare facility a disservice. For at least the next 3 years, 802.11n is a much better solution, but 802.11ac is already here! The only drawback with jumping two steps ahead to 802.11ac is there aren’t many devices with the 802.11ac chip sets in them just yet...but more will be on the market soon.

We’re talking about RF, of course...if you are outside under a shade tree, why should you have less wireless coverage than indoors. Improving and expanding outdoor coverage across the full campus can create more space for those who want wireless access. Granted, you may not have much need for an outdoor triage, but depending on a wireless signal that has to pass through concrete and steel may be the reason why your employees all congregate in one place on their lunch breaks.

Nurses have the agility, give them more mobility

Nurses have enough responsibility without having to hoof it back to a static workstation to download critical patient medication or other data. Mobile hand scanners give nurses the ability to scan medications, patient wristbands and IDs from anywhere in the hospital in a secure fashion. The secure mobility gives them the ability to show off that agility!

Eliminate multiple SSIDs

How many SSIDs are needed to make sleeping at night easier? Build one network, give doctors access to the network resources they need (like the Electronic Medical Records system) without concern of patients or visitors having access to the same resources while checking their email. Your helpdesk will thank you later.

Balance IT workload with actual number of staff

heavy workload

In every industry lately it’s been common practice to reduce manpower and increase responsibilities of those that remain. That’s nonsense. Unfortunately, as many IT managers will tell their staff, “It’s just the way it is.” Well, if that’s the case then anything that helps the reduced staff do their job more quickly and efficiently is worth the cost of the investment. If fewer people are to do more work, then at least give them the tools in software or hardware to do their jobs. Your IT staff will be able to spend more time solving network connectivity issues for the doctors and nurses so ultimately, the result is better service and care for your patients.

Are any of these a problem that has been witnessed on your current network? If so, then an upgrade to your hospital wireless network is in order. None of the above can happen without taking a look at what infrastructure is currently in place and what can be done to remedy any of those problems.

Here at SecurEdge, we can help you do just that. Contact us here for a free consultation or if you have any questions on how to take the next step in upgrading your wireless network system.
